Startup Stiwdio Member Spotlight: Will Langley, Founder of C-Bloc Productions

Stiwdio Spolight:

Will Langley, Founder of C-Bloc Productions Cardiff, Wales – 1st August 2024.

Stiwdio shines a light on Will Langley, the ambitious founder of C-Bloc Productions, a company encompassing both high-quality music productions and thought-provoking documentaries.

A Life Steeped in Creativity

Langley’s fascination with film and television began in his childhood, fueled by his father’s work as a BBC editor.

He spent his early years experimenting with his dad’s video camera, crafting short films alongside his musical pursuits.

From Education to Enterprise: The Birth of C-Bloc

After a period of uncertainty following high school, Langley enrolled in a music production course at Crosskeys College. This marked the genesis of C-Bloc Productions, named after the college building where his passion for music technology blossomed.

Bloc Sessions: Democratizing Music Production

Facing the financial constraints of many aspiring musicians, Langley devised Bloc Sessions. This innovative concept offers low-cost live sessions, providing professional production value for artists of all levels.

From its humble beginnings in 2022, Bloc Sessions has grown exponentially, recording over 148 sessions in just 14 days and collaborating with artists across the UK and Norway. The future holds international expansion plans for Spain and the USA in 2025.

Startup Stiwdio: A Launchpad for Success

Langley credits Stiwdio, USW’s business incubator program, with playing a pivotal role in C-Bloc’s success. The program provided crucial support, including free office space and access to essential equipment, allowing him to overcome initial barriers and focus on creative development.

From Music to Film: Directing Windrush Cymru @ 75

A chance encounter with a musician led Langley to document filmmaker Ify Iwobi and her organization, Race Council Cymru.

Witnessing their dedication to the BAME community in Wales, Langley proposed a documentary on the Windrush Generation, marking their 75th anniversary in the UK.

Creative Freedom and Recognition

Langley was entrusted with full creative control over the film, “Windrush Cymru @ 75.” Wearing multiple hats – camera operator, sound recordist, and interviewer – he documented the stories of 32 individuals, including prominent figures like First Minister Mark Drakeford.

The film’s premiere at Cineworld Cardiff was followed by a prestigious win at the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival.

A Royal Encounter and a Dual Path.

The film’s impact extended beyond awards.

Langley had the extraordinary opportunity to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales and discuss the project. This experience solidified his dual career path: music production through Bloc Sessions and documentary filmmaking under the C-Bloc banner.

Influences and Aspirations

While acknowledging his love for film and a diverse range of creative influences, Langley emphasizes storytelling as his core value, regardless of the medium. He prioritizes human connection in the filmmaking process, focusing on creating an atmosphere where interviewees feel comfortable sharing their stories.

Looking Forward: Growth and New Projects

The future looks bright for C-Bloc Productions. Langley is committed to expanding Bloc Sessions’ online presence and international reach. He’s actively involved in filming a documentary on a Cardiff band and collaborating with Race Council Cymru on their next project.

Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers

Langley’s final message is a call to action for aspiring filmmakers: network relentlessly, build connections, and never hesitate to pitch ideas. Every conversation, even if it doesn’t lead to immediate work, contributes to a valuable network of peers and potential collaborators.
